Wales Slate Business Breakfast 24.5.2018
Posted: Friday 25 May 2018
As part of the Gwynedd Business Week 2018 a bespoke event was arranged by the Wales Slate World Heritage Site Nomination team at the Adventure Terminal at Penrhyn Quarry. The event started at 9am with a cuppa and a pastry, and spectacular views from the Galeri balcony overlooking the historic Penrhyn Quarry.
A range of speakers were on hand to tell us about the World Heritage Site nomination, the significance of the Ogwen Valley within the slate industry, the economic benefits of World Heritage Site status, an overview of the brand new Town Centre Loans Scheme for Bethesda, a brief history of Zip World and a fantastic round up of all the great work carried out by Partneriaeth Ogwen in the valley…a busy programme to say the least!
ITV Wales were there to film a feature on the World Heritage Site nomination, and after some quick interviews, the group split into two to undertake the tours. The first group travelled over to the Welsh Slate headquarters for a special behind the scenes tour of the operational quarry and workshops to see the process of extracting, handling and processing the slate. We as the second group were taken on a trip to the top of the quarry in the new Zip World Quarry Explorer truck, with great commentary from ‘Spud’ our guide for the morning, once at the top we got to experience the adrenaline junkies whizzing down the zip lines and had amazing views of the quarry landscape, the mountains and valleys, and all the way across to Penrhyn Castle and Port Penrhyn.
A great morning was had by all!
