David Gwyn
Historian

My early childhood was spent in Bethesda, in the 1960s. That was when things were starting to change at Penrhyn quarry but I have clear memories of the old ways - of the railway lines extending all over the place, the water-balances raising the blocks to the mills on Red Lion level, and the huge number of men working at the rock-face, or splitting, or throwing unworkable rock over the tip-ends. Though we moved to England when I was still quite young, I resolved that I would one day return to Wales, and that I would chronicle this industry and its people.
